1)The Invaders in the Year 2000- The super soldier serum was stolen by Nazis giving rise to a new form of warfare. I see Kitty Pride as main character with Frank Castle and Wade Wilson for supporting character under the command of the master of magnetism him self. Nick Ferry is President.
2) Domino and Shader Star:They are still out there, no one uses them but they are. This is just a waste of badass.

Comic book artist Michael Turner dies at 37

SANTA MONICA, Calif. - Michael Turner, a comic book artist who drew covers for major titles such as "Superman/Batman," "The Flash" and "Civil War,'" has died. He was 37.

Turner died June 27 at a Santa Monica hospital of complications related to cancer, said Vince Hernandez, editor in chief of Aspen MLT, the Santa Monica publishing company Turner founded in 2003. Turner had battled bone cancer for eight years.

Through his company, Turner created online comic adaptations for the NBC series "Heroes" and published his own titles, including the best-selling "Fathom," a deep-sea story about a female superhero.

He also drew covers for large projects such as DC Comics' "Justice League" and Marvel's "Civil War" and was a regular cover artist for "Superman/Batman" and "The Flash."

"He was definitely one of the most popular and influential comic-book artists working right now," said Andrew Farago, curator of San Francisco's Cartoon Art Museum. "He was very, very much in demand as a cover artist on high-profile projects."

Ryan Liebowitz, general manager of the Golden Apple Comics store in Los Angeles, said Turner's name was synonymous with special-edition covers that often became collectibles. The milestone 500th issue of "Uncanny X-Men," due out next week, will feature a special-edition cover by Turner.

Turner was also known for drawing female comic book characters that evoked both innocence and sex appeal and exuded energy.

In 1994, the budding artist was hired by Century City-based Top Cow Productions after an editor saw his work at the Comic-Con convention in San Diego.

At Top Cow, Turner co-created "Witchblade," a comic about a voluptuous female detective who fights evil after discovering a mystical glove. The comic went on to make Top Cow's name and set the standard for Turner's future work.

Secret Invasion/Final Crisis - Summer Crossover Season

A lot of people dread the big summer crossovers, but to me, they're just a fact of comics life, they happen every year, some better ("Fall of the Mutants"), some worse ("Onslaught").
What do you guys think of this years crossovers?

At Marvel, the shapeshifting alien Skrulls have infiltrated the ranks of Marvel's superheroes, and have sprung an ambush in "Secret Invasion" Who's a skrull? Who isn't? Haha, unless they're some surprises, I think I figured it out already. Anybody have any predictions? I'll show you mine if you show me yours.

Over at DC, Grant Morrison is at the helm of what is purported to be the "Final Crisis". I'm not sure at all yet what this is about, other than that Darkseid and the New Gods figure heavily. The first issue left me underwhelmed, but the sketchbook was incredible. I hope the rest of the series lives up to it...

Comics canceled before there time and what you would...

Of course, I could write an entire article focused on The Ultraverse, but I wont because I may be the only fan-boy who misses it.

I think that DC'S The Power Company written by Mark Waid and illustrated by Tom Grummet had lots of potential and should be on the stands for us to buy today. If nothing else, I'm surprised that the characters aren't mentioned more since they have such practical applications for dramatic content

What I would do:
If I were to re-write it I would spend a lot less time setting up the characters, explaining the rolls of the members in the "firm" based Power Company and get to more drama and action. I would use the book as a back door "showcase" title to write stories about the fans favorite characters, both heroes and villains, who don't have their own book.

What I would not do:
Have a contest to let the fans pick who the next member of the Power Company would be.

The Big Apple Convention Summer Sizzler just keeps getting hotter!

Our Star Trek roster (previously consisting only of McDowell from “Star Trek: Generations”) has been increased by the lovely addition of Chase Masterson, who played Leeta in “Star Trek: Deep Space 9.”

David Zen Mansley, the voice of Agent Bishop and Darius Dunn on the Teenage Mutant Ninja turtles TV cartoon, has been with us the past two conventions and rejoins us. This time he heads up a Turtles contingent that will include Wayne Grayson, the voice of Michaelangelo as well as Joey from Yu-Gi-Oh, last seen at Big Apple in 2005, and Adrian, character designer for the TV cartoon who also has his own rock band. There is a possibility of even more Turtles-connected folks appearing, so stay tuned.

Dark Shadows fans will be pleased to know that Kathryn Leigh Scott, who played Maggie Evans, will be with us. She also adds to our Star Trek lineup, thanks to her role as Nuria in “Start Trek: The Next Generation.”

Other returning guests include Jasmin St. Claire, model, actress, pro wrestler, and host of the DVDzine “Metal's Darkside,” and Monique Dupree, singer and actress known as the first African-American scream queen.

I saw a lot of wonderful costumes at I-Con and NY Comic Con, and I would love to see them all at Captain Zorikh's Costume Contest. The contest at the National Expo was the largest and most spectacular ever, and easily overflowed the space in which it was taking place. This time we have a much bigger space in which to hold our contest, and we are working on certain categories in which to reward our contestants.

I've been reading comics for about 13 years now, thanks to my hubby who has been reading them his whole life. Witchblade is the one that won me over so there is a special place in my heart for that particular book. :-)

I lean toward bad ass chicks who beat people up, so Fathom, Tomb Raider etc. are my bag.

So, yeah... that's all about me. :-)

To help better understand the choices made in The List, below is a brief introduction to the world of Comic Books.

The Beginning:

One of the most important contributions the United States of America has made to modern civilization is the creation and the popularization of the comic book genre. It is widely accepted that the present form of the comic book, in which word balloons are used, began in New York in 1896 with ‘The Yellow Kid’. This simple comic about a “snaggle-toothed child with a goofy grin” was the genesis of what has become a multi billion-dollar sector of commerce known as the Comic Book Industry.

In the early years free artistic expression was encouraged, resulting in growth and prospering. Initially it was humor, horror, mystery, adventure, and science fiction stories that dominated the medium, nurturing the imagination of millions of people around the world. Entrepreneurial artists with creative minds who wanted to share their perspective on reality formed small companies producing some of the greatest visual and literary works of the 20th century. Unfortunately however, the conservative minds that dominated the political spectrum of the United States at the time regarded most of the content morally unacceptable. As a result the Comics Code Authority (CCA) was created in 1954 to censor undesirable elements from the American conscience.

Creatures such as vampires, werewolves and zombies and words such as ‘crime’, ‘horror’ and ‘terror’ were forbidden to appear in print. The result of the suppression of this freedom of expression was the termination of some of the greatest stories ever told.

One of the worst tragedies occurred when EC comics, which was one of the most imaginative companies to have emerged from the American empire, was forced to only concentrate on its humor magazine, ‘Mad’, and cancelled all of its crime, horror, satire, military and science fiction comics. This lost opportunity for creating an extensive library of materials based on these forbidden genres is unimaginable. As Diane Di Prima once stated, “The only war that matters is the war against the imagination”, and the restrictions in intellectual and social development imposed by the CCA was a devastating blow for humanity.

With the censorship of comics that delved into the deeper and darker side of human nature, Superhero comics flourished. Certain underground comics that refused to abide by the CCA obtained a cult following, however, in general, it was the companies that abided with the government regulators, hence giving them a wider distribution, that gained in popularity.

The Rebellion:

For the next few decades after 1954 there were minor skirmishes between artists and the CCA. Over time these confrontations resulted in the softening of some restrictions, such as the ban on referring to homosexuality in 1989. This allowed the first mainstream character to be to be outed in 1992 with ‘Northstar’ from the ‘Alpha Flight’ series. This event was heralded as a major breakthrough and embraced by comic book enthusiasts, but it was condemned by certain religious and conservative organizations.

The independent comic book companies however were ahead of their time and were more innovative then the large corporations that self-censored their artists to maintain their good standing with the government regulators. Before Northstar was outed, Kitchen Sink Enterprises had already introduced gay characters in 1980 with the first issue of ‘Gay Comix’. After Northstar’s minor claim to fame and the cancellation of the series in 1994, it was the independent comic book companies that challenged the status quo. The same year that ‘Alpha Flight’ was cancelled, ‘Go-Go Boy’ was released through select comic book retailers as the first openly gay, lesbian and transgender monthly superhero comic book dealing with such important issues as AIDS, gay-bashing, personal identity and family, as well as evil corporations that wanted to rule the world.

Even though during the 1980’s and 90’s the mainstream companies maintained their dominance of the industry, Alternative Comics gained in popularity. This forced the large corporations to take an aggressive stance staving off the coming onslaught from the independent creators while trying to retain their market share. Marvel Comics tried to reduce exposure of comic fans to the independent publishers by flooding the market, hence retail shelf space, with poorly developed stories and shallow characters. In 1994, they even went as far as acquiring Heroes World distributors to exclusively distribute their comics. This started what is referred to as the “exclusivity wars”, the end result of which was that most distributors went out of business by 1997, and 90% of the Direct Market share went to Diamond Comic Distributors. This futile attempt to stifle creative evolution also almost bankrupted Marvel Comics.

The Triumph:

During this time of strife, many of the top artists in the industry broke away from the major companies and formed co-ops in which they published their books under umbrella-corporations. The main benefit obtained from these alliances was that artists were able to retain the rights and the creative development for their characters. Once creative confines were removed, the caliber of comics drastically improved, shifting the mindset of readers into demanding more intellectually changeling material. As a result there was an explosion of creativity reminiscent of the early years before the CCA’s censorship. This era is referred to as the beginning of the Modern Age of Comics, and was the setting for the real life Corporate Comic Wars.

During this period, amidst this unsuitability, some of the most successful comic books in history were developed. The emergence of these Alternative Comics was a rebirth for the industry the impact of which can still be felt today. It is as a direct result of the commoditization of the Worlds created through these comics that the film and television, textile and toy, and the gaming industries have prospered to the extent that they have. Licensing agreements with publishers and creators have produced what is now one of the major business growth sectors within the United States.

The Implications:

During the 2006 Comic-Con, Deepak Chopra made the following statement about comic books:

"Comics engage both your left brain, because they are linguistically structured and there's language, and at the same time they engage your right brain because of the images. In fact, ... I’m sure ... brain waves would show coherence between the right and left brains, which is the prelude to creativity.

“Art has a function because it not only reflects what’s happening in the collective psyche and collective consciousness, but it also in many ways mirrors of the evolution of our collective consciousness. If you track the evolution of these comics… from the 1930s right up to this moment, you’ll see that they actually mirror human evolution and particularly, the evolution of human consciousness.”

By finally reducing the constraints set by the CCA from the development process of comic books, we have been ushered into a new era of imagination brought about by unrestrained creativity. The effects of this newfound freedom are still in its infancy, which means that we must continue to nurture its growth, providing a medium for artists to create without government censorship.

At a time when conservatives minds are trying to tightened their stranglehold on the American conscience, it has become crucial for us to remember what has been accomplished up to this point, and the long hard battle that has been waged to gain these freedom. For our society to flourish, government and corporate censorship must be removed in all its forms.

The List:

The period known as the Model Age of Comics is probably the most important era since the dawn of the Comic Book Industry. The shakeup that occurred in the 1980’s and 90’s resulted in a surge of creativity that tested the boundaries set by our society. I have dubbed this period ‘The Age of Freedom’ since it gave birth to Alternative Comics and marks the beginning of the dismantling of the CCA and the censorship of human thought from comic books. Below are 8 out of the top 23 of the most important comic book storylines from this period. Some were a brilliant desperate attempts by the major companies to retain market share, others a mastery of imagination and freedom of expression. In no particular order the list is as follows:

1. Cerebus: This series was started in 1977 by Dave Sim and ended in 2004. It is one continuous tale, spanning 300 issues and 6,000 pages, making it the longest running storyline in comic book history. With Cerebus, Sim demonstrated that an independent creator could obtain a core fan base and grow to be a formidable force in the industry. This inspired a whole generation of artists to create and distribute their own comics. As for what this comic is about, you could say it’s about everything: from morality to brutality, from sorcery to spiritually, from drunken debauchery to strategic warfare: Cerebus is an epic that has it all.

2. Love and Rockets: The first issue of this collection was released in 1981 making it one of the first self-published comics from the “alternative comics revolution of the 1980s”. L&R is not about a specific story line, but an assortment of intricate characters, primarily chicano, that interact and grow over time from the late 70’s to the present.

3. Frank Miller’s Batman: Miller has produced two of the most important comics in history. First is ‘The Dark Knight Returns’, a fictional tale set 20 years in the future where Batman is forced out of retirement to deal with a crime ridden Gotham. This series reintroduced a darker Batman to a whole new generation of comic fans and helped usher in a new era of tougher and grittier superheroes. The second book is ‘Year One’. This time Miller recounted the origin of Batman in the same humanistic form as before. This storyline turned out to be just as popular as the DKR and galvanized Batman’s fan base created a year earlier. Miller was able to use the recognition he obtained from this work, and his work with ‘Daredevil’, to kick off his independent carrier which introduced the now classic ‘Sin City’ published through Dark Horse Comics.

4. Lobo: The Last Czarnian: Lobo is one of the most controversial characters in comic book history and this is the series that kicked it off. Before this four part mini-series, Lobo was a secondary character introduced in ‘Omega Men’ and maintained in the DC universe. The Last Czarnian was a quirky tale of a bounty hunter bound by honor to carry out a mission which involved his fourth-grade teacher, a murderous gang of groupies, a vengeful truck driving Elvis look alike, ruthless paramilitary grannies, a pan-galactic demolition dance company, a planetary S.W.A.T. team, a Spelling Bee to the death, and a few secondary themes to boot. In 1990 it was surprising to see a major company like DC comics release a book which was based on pure violence and sadistically masochistic humor, which explains why it was completely sold out in the first few days. As if this wasn’t enough, DC comics followed the success of this series with Lobo being hired by a drunken Eastern Bunny to kill a “cross-dressing” sweatshop running evil Santa Clause, in the ‘Lobo Paramilitary Christmas Special’.

DC’s final act of defiance through Lobo occurred with the release of ‘Infanticide’, a carnage ridden tale in which the bastard children of Lobo try to kill their father. As a reviewer noted, “if you enjoy dark, twisted humour and love those B-rated Brian Yuzna gore fests, this book should be right up your alley.”

5. Death of superman: The initial reaction from the comic book community to the ‘Doomsday’ storyline was lukewarm at best, however by the time the final battle took place the North American populace was in a frenzy. The mainstream media disseminated the news about the demise of Superman and people desperate to get their copy began to rush into comic book stores, to find out that there were no copies to be found. At the time this storyline was released, Superman fans were in decline and most comic book stores had not predicated the demand from the general populace. Regular customers who had pre-ordered their copy were selling their books to people on the streets for outrageous amounts. Rumors were circulating that the bagged issue of Superman #75 was selling for as high $200 on the day of its release. The importance of this series was not that Superman was dead, because everyone in the Industry knew that he would be revamped, it was the fact that the story generated so much interest. It proved to fans, artists, and companies that there was a huge market yet untapped. Considering that right now hundreds of millions of dollars are being spent to create movies based on comic books, we can assume that the Industry was able to capitalize on this market.

6. Batman: Bane and Venom: One of the most important sagas in the DC universe began with Batman becoming a drug addict in Legends of the Dark Knight #16-20. This story introduced the drug Venom, a “strength-enhancing super-steroid” which was later used by Bane to break Batman's back in the ‘Knightfall’ epic. The result of this saga sent the Batman books into a tale spin with guest appearences by almost every major Batman villain and the introduction of Jean-Paul Valley as the new Batman, who later gained his own series with ‘Azrael’. This was DC’s way of shaking up the Batman universe in the same manner as ‘Death of Superman’, and resulted in two other mega-sagas in ‘Knightquest’ and ‘KnightsEnd’. The success of this storyline was compatible to the death of Robin in ‘Death in the Family’, a series where, for the first time in history, fans decided the outcome to a story by casting their votes for a possible ending.

7. Watchman: This series by Alan Moore, the creator of ‘V for Vendetta’, ‘From Hell’, and numerous other books, is considered by many to be the greatest comic book ever created. Moore accomplished more for the Industry, from 1986 to 87 in twelve issues, then had ever been done by any artist in the past. He and Dave Gibbons created a science fiction story that was regarded as a literary masterpiece and awarded the prestigious Hugo Award in 1988. The only graphic novel to ever receive this praise. The story “is set in 1985, in an alternative history United States where costumed adventurers are real and the country is edging closer to a nuclear war with the Soviet Union.” In this not-so-fictional reality we are introduced to super heroes without super powers and serious personal issues. It is a masterpiece and if I was to have provided a ranking to this list based on a must read criteria then ‘The Watchman’ would be sitting near the top.

8. Spawn: Todd McFarlane, the creator of Spawn, gained fame within the Industry through his work with Spiderman. McFarlane worked on numerous projects for both Marvel and DC comics before venturing off to form Image Comics in 1992 with six other “high-profile illustrators”. Spawn, a netherworld character, was at best a cross between ‘Batman’ and ‘Spiderman’ and at worst a blatant rip-off. It is not because of the story that Spawn has become one of the most important comics from this period; it is because of what McFarlane was able to accomplish with the book. In the early 1990’s, I recall seeing an interview in which McFarlane was asked what he wanted to do with his art, and his reply was (paraphrasing) ‘I want to develop a unique style, and make millions of dollars’, and this is exactly what he did. By creating a character which pushed the boundaries of what was morally acceptable by the regulators he proved that by creating something beyond the constraints set by government censors, he could fill a gap within the industry. McFarlane set an example for other artists who wanted to break away from their shackles by showing them that monetary success was attainable outside of the corporate structure.

It's called "Compound Eye" and it centers around an East Bay cartoonist who draws a controversial comic strip depicting the World Trade Center rebuilt as an IHOP with two stacks of pancakes rising high into the sky, and how it affects his roommate who is trying to quietly run a pirate radio station out of his basement. The movie stars Fausto Caceres (from the radio show, Shirley and Spinoza) and Jesse Reklaw (the cartoon, "Slow Wave"), and uses their real lives and weaves them into a fictional story.

classic story, told in the Mighty Marvel Manner (It really is that old school)

In issue three, Tony Stark shows up to get Thor to sign up for registration; and man, does he put Iron Man down. He gives him reprieve, but you know its not over. Thor has family business to attend to, but when he's done, you know he'll be back to settle scores with Iron Man, both for his underhanded abuse of their friendship resulting in the violation of Thor's very being, and the betrayal and subsequent death of Captain America, Thor's favorite Mortal like, ever.

World War Hulk

...is just about the best superhero story, (including Planet Hulk) I've read in last ten years. The writer Grek Pak did a wonderful job building the whole thing up through the months before the Hulk's return and really gives you a feel for the loss the Hulk feels, after finally finding a place where he not only fits in, but is loved and appreciated for what he is, then seeing it all torn away from him. He's pissed!

What's your favorite comics story? I've got a million of 'em! But I'll start off with just two, very different kinds of comics --

First, I really love the "A Game Of You" story-arc from Sandman(#32). Barbie's in a coma, and has to travel through the fairytale world of her subconcious in order to save herself from a parasytic entity called The Cuckoo.

One of my favorite superhero stories is from the Claremont/Silvestri period of Uncanny X-Men, (Beginning # 225) the "Tell Them In Sparta: Fall of the Mutants" story. It featured what I think is my favorite X-Men lineup, ( Wolverine, Colossus, Havok, Rogue, Dazzler, Longshot, and Psylocke lead by rockin' cool mohawked storm -- I just wish it was Nightcrawler instead of Longshot.) in a battle to save reality from some sort of interdimensional demon. They're fighting vikings and robots, flight by flight up a skyscraper in Dallas. it's awesome!

Favorite Writers?

Ok, now, who are your favorite writers of comics out there?

I really liked the early Vertigo stuff -- Neil Gaiman's Sandman and Garth Ennis on Hellblazer and Preacher. But two series that I don't think got as much attention as they deserved were Pete Milligan's Shade The Changing Man and Jamie Delano's Animal Man, which for my money, was even better than Grant Morrison's run, which is really saying something.

Milligan's X-Force/X-Statix was great while it lasted, but I knew nothing so strange and wonderful could last long at Marvel, as with Morrison's New X-Men, which for my money, is some of his strongest work.

I think Grant Morrison works best in short bursts -- he always starts out so strong and mind-blowing, but peters out at the end, like with Invisibles, The Filth, Doom Patrol, etc.

Warren Ellis is problematic for me. Sometimes I feel like the characterization isn't there, all of his characters, whether a 10-year-old girl or a 80-year-old Grandma, all talk like Spider-Jerusalem. Consequently, I tend to like his big action type books like The Authority or Planetary, or funny stuff like Next Wave.

The wave of Brit writers in American mainstream comics was just about the last great creative boost in comics, at least that I can think of.

INFORMATION (FAQ) ABOUT THE ORIGINAL UNIVERSE

I figured I’d share some Q&A on a new venture:

Q: So what is The Original Universe?

A: It’s close to the works produced by Dr. Jerry Bails, Roy Thomas in the first incarnation of ALTER EGO, and the zines that Len Wein and Marv Wolfman contributed to in their early lives -- except that I only compare in kind, not in quality! I don’t think that big of myself.

A fanzine has a much smaller financial requirements from its membership -even no cost. In fact, the Usual could require nothing more than a regular Letter of Comment [LOC] (I’ll explain both of these later in this missive).

Q: Where’s “The Original Universe” name come from?

A: A few years ago DC Comics used this name to promote some of their product, to separate it from Elseworlds stories.

I found the name ironic; the original universe at DC was really the original multiverse pre-Crisis on Infinite Earths. DC now has another multiverse after 52, but the damage has been done to many characters as different writers tried to tack on more origin ideas. It also lead to calling characters ‘radioactive’ when too much messing around made them untouchable, as well as the dreaded ‘retcon’ (retroactive continuity) word, when everything about the characters was changed yet again for new continuity. A prime example: The Legion of Superheroes now in its fifth history rewrite - although there are seeming originals in the present day at the moment.

Many of us in this zine were readers before Crisis, so we know where everything came from. Parts of this zine will hopefully celebrate that past.

Q: Who are you?

A: In 1990 I originated COMICOPIA, a comicbook APA. This I contributed to for 100 issues, more than 16 years. I began writing for APAs 6 months earlier, and at one time was a member of 4 of them.

I’m a 4-time winner of the National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) [so far; it’s 2007 when I write this]. As of June 30th I added 1st-time Script Frenzy winner to my resume. I got a BfA in Cinema: Animation Option in May 1990, so it’s about time I used it! :)

I’ve had 13 letters published in comics to date, and so far have 5 tabletop roleplaying game publishing credits (as of July 2007), 4 of them in super-hero games. At least 2 more will come out this year.

As you can read, I have a lot of know-how here... not to mention collecting comics for more than 26 years!

Q: Just what is “the Usual”?

A: This is a tradition with zines, in ways similar to Minac. It takes several forms:

i. Letters of comment (LOCs). My fellow APA-folks will be familiar with this. They are like MCs, only shorter. Often they are about 2-3 pages of text before the font size is reduced. They can be comments on the zine itself, comments replying to other LOCs... they tend to share the vibrancy of MCs like that.

Even if you contribute other things to the zine, you’re encouraged to still LOC for this reason.

ii. Cover art / illustrations

There’s a zine tradition called “fillos”: small illustrations to go as fill between long blocks of text.

Likewise, I hope contributors can provide artwork for covers. Some such artists have gone on to wider exposure and awards.

iii.articles

One zine I’m a part of prints several pieces by others. Some are reprints from FAPA (the now-legendary F/SF APA that’s been around for over 50 years so far); some are columns from his mom on the incredible travels she’s gone on worldwide... and one deals with the life of a man as he went through WW 2 as a soldier.

The Original Universe deals with comicbooks, so pieces will most likely cover that. Some of them may be original fiction, from me or others; I print them up at no additional cost to readers (if from others, obviously), but please be mindful the length isn’t too great (4 pages max).

Some of it can just have a link to comics as thin as the fact all who write for it / read it are comic fans. I’m not going to push for anything more strict than that -- and since we all are fans anyway, that will not come into question. I hope for more comicbook content, but if I’m the sole provider for that, it’s fine.

iii. Letters of Comment (LOCs)

As I said, these can be similar to the MCs we APA folks are accustomed to.

LOCs as e-mail are fine. I send my LOCs to my 2 other zines that way. You don’t have to worry about formatting; that’s my deal.

iv. zine exchanges

This is another longtime tradition for zines: trading your zine for mine.

Q: Is this an electronic zine?

A: No. I’ve already spoken at length over the years on how I have a dislike for electronic-only zines. There’s an archive of electronic zines at efanzines.com , and I may well store zines after the fact there, but the originals will indeed be printed and mailed first.

Q: Are there rules for flame wars?

A: Nothing official, just a simple guideline: I read everything before I print it. If it’s just there to start a fight, I leave it out. In general we’re mature enough not to pick fights anyway, so I likely won’t even need to use this guideline.

Q: Is there a subscription fee?

A: Not an enforced one. There is a voluntary one (another form of “the Usual”), but it isn’t a necessity. It’s not a huge dent: $3 US per sample issue, $12 for a year. I’m staying with a bi-monthly schedule.

Would I like people to subscribe? Of course! Any subscription funds will go straight to paying for photocopies and mailing.

Q: Are there MinAc rules? (Minimum Activity. An APA term)

A: Yes and no. Yes, because you have to contribute the Usual every 2 issues or you drop out. No, because subscribers still receive issues until their subscriptions run out (if they’re subscribed). I’ll let you know an issue before, so you’ll have approximately 2 months to re-subscribe. You just don’t get feedback unless you LOC as well.

There are no concepts like Member or Waiting lists. If you contribute non-flames, I print you.

Q: How long in pagecount will this be?

A: Well what I’d love is a 32-page zine, but the ones I’ve seen at that length are 15-20 years old. I’ll be starting at 12 pages. More will just be gravy, but 32 will be the maximum for now. I just received one in early May that was 46 pages, but for me that’s just crazy.

(I just realized: it may be shorter for financial and content reasons.)

Q: When will this all start?

A: The mail-out date for issue 1 will be July 16th. It might be a few days later because of schedule logistics, but I’ll make a huge try.

Rise and Fall of the Shiar Empire

in the past twelve issues of Uncanny X-Men, from the aftermath of Decimation until now; the seminal X title has been running one single arc, and boy was the climax and conclusion a doozy.

Before I start spilling the spoilers, did anybody else enjoy this as much as I did?

I mean, I was skeptical at first, but the conclusion won me over. You gotta love those underhyped surprises!

D.C. will always sucker me in with their events-- even 'Zero Hour' was alright by me. The one-day event 'World War Three' that spanned 5 books was a bummer. I understand that it was to act as a quick 'fill in the blanks' to explain oneYearLater changes (Aquaman, Nightwing and so on) but it left me feeling suckered and insulted.

does anyone else think D.C. is heading into some major backlash? --They've got Richard Donner working on Action Comics with Geoff Johns who just happened into comics while working with the old man, suddenly he's got the keys to the castle and full-on Dan Jurgens treatment (I love the guy, especially Green Lantern but do we need a Booster Gold ongoing?)
Brad Metzler on JLA has put together the best first run of any 'flagship' title I can remember (albeit one which must be read at once to appreciate)
52 was so shockingly successful that they're continuing down the weekly road with no break between titles (52 to Countdown) and they are raising the price fifty-cents.
52 also had Greg Rucka and Grant Morrison 'Working Together' which confounds me but it worked out well.

I could go on but my point is that I feel D.C. has raised the bar for comics and done much in the past 2 years to constantly raise it-- but by the end of 'Countdown' how many titles will we be flooded with? How many more events that "Change everything forever until everything changes forever again" Will they be able to maintain the level of quality when spreading out so thin? Dan Didio says that over the next year all DCU books will be in real time; or at least in the same timeline (maybe possible if you kill Nightwing?)

Maybe D.C. in all of its looking ahead should consider that the bigshot writers from television, the N.Y.Times Bestseller list and movies may tire of this fad and leave them with
countless dangling plots and bad ideas that seemed like good ones coming from an ex-writer for the O.C. or Sex in the City-- whichever in hell it was.
When the next big event is forced upon us to fix continuity or just to retcon for a new writer's ideas I hope they look to the guy in line at the convention who lives and breathes this stuff or to Gail fuckin' Simone who generally kicks ass.

Black Canary is going to die.

I'm always trying to guess what DC is going to do next; trying to pin down the motives for some of the things they do.

I think they may kill Black Canary:

1."Anomolies" from other earths will be killed in Countdown

2. For deaths in Countdown to have more weight than C-listers offer, some A-list must fall.

3. DC has put Black Canary on a veritable fast-track to prominence with JLA; a miniseries and now getting back with Ollie.

4. Green Arrow has already died recently so it's not he, in fact it could be the death of Black Canary that raises Green Arrow to a level of popularity he's not enjoyed in some time. . . all of his positive changes of the past year (He claims were for Dinah) for nothing-- imagine the possibilities for Batman-esque rage, "crossing the line", paranoia etc. that makes some DC characters so popular. I would not put it past the writers to use a year's worth of character development on Black Canary and then kill her to simply propel Green Arrow into different territory

5. Sin. She would be a very interesting and dangerous character if her "Mother-figure" was taken away. A true angst-filled villain and shoe-in for taking the name Black Canary when JSA relaunches in 2010.

6. Green Lantern. He and Ollie haven't had much to go on a road trip about in some time; GL and BC are teammates(BC the 'Chairperson' of JLA) so the whole league will be 'Rocked' by her death especially Hal who will likely back Ollie no matter what. GL will surely be in the spotlight with JLA, and the Sinestro Corps. ordeal-- Remember if something happens to OA then where will the imprisoned Superboy-PRIME(Also an Anomoly) be held? Could he be held?

Throughout the history of literature female characters have been used to further the stories of the men they orbit. I am not a huge fan of this and much is owed to Gail Simone et al for moving many of DC's female leads into leading roles; however I don't put it past Dini, Didio and the others at DC not to use BC in this fasion.

A major character has got to die, if you don't want to kill any of your big guns then promote some new BLOOD to those ranks and "Off with their heads"

Hopefully I'm wrong because I love BC more and more and can't wait for the mini.

Artistic Collaboration?

Hi guys,

I'm working on producing some comics and was wondering if anyone out there knows anyone with a very specific skill-set I could collaborate with. I'm looking for a Writer who also enjoys creating with Photoshop, Illustrator or Flash.

Basically, I want to do a comic "The Marvel Way" -- I have a general plot, characters, theme, but I need a writer to help flesh out the details and provide snazzy dialogue. I'll do the main art in pen and ink, then my collaborator will embellish and lay it out digitally.

I've been trying to do it all myself, but it's just an uphill battle, and hey, two heads are better than one. I live in NYC, so preferably this person is on the East Coast, but in this new digital wonderland, location may not be a factor.

So, come on guys, do me a favor and get the word out!

Earth X

Whenever a friend of mine and I are talking Marvel Universe, we inevitably refer to Earth X as sort of the bible of the Marvel Universe, even though technically, it's supposed to be sort of Elseworlds story and not the true future.

I think it's more useful as a guide to the past, particularly the whole point about the Earth being an Celestial Egg, and that destroying such eggs is the true purpose of Galactus. I think that's brilliant.

There are a lot of other really cool points Earth-X clarifys, what do you guys think?

Unbreakable DVD Extras

oh man - i SO freaking love this movie and last night i decided to watch all the extras on the DVD.

there is the now trademark extra from director Shyamalan - a video clip (yes - actual "video") from when he was a kid & dreaming of being a director one day and it's hilarious. heh!

and normal deleted scenes but he does a mini-intro for each one and explains why most of them were cut. nice.

the 2 coolest things? about a 15-minute featurette and about a 20-minute "Comic books and Superheros" thing with lots of great input from Will Eisner, Denny O´Neil, Frank Miller, and several people i'd never heard of.

What? Who died?!?

I can't believe the buildup over the death in this issue. I really thought they were going to put Nightwing down for good.

This issue has some major character inconsistencies that are difficult to overlook and I'm trying real hard to leave out anything spoilerish but the red hood and the person he is chasing are written way out of charater.

Huge liberties are taken, but I've had a crush on Mary Marvel since that 'Super Buddies' stuff in JLA so I'll stay on this book.

Anyone with me on this Red Hood issue?

the truth behind what happened in 52-- the story of what bruce went through in the cave in isolation. . . what happened?

It's revealed in 665 but I dont trust Morrison, I know he had a direct hand in this as he writes both Batman and 52 but I dislike the direction he's going in.

Anyone else feel the same way or am I alone?

I think Bats is better left alone and not broken down. Morrison is going into the Joe Cool shit and that is ridiculous. . . or maybe I'm wrong. . . . .

D.C.U. has gotten so clean that Bats should just find his place and stay== stop sending him into space and elsewhere he belongs in gotham. If JLA needs Tactical info, course of action etc. that's one thing but c'mon. He's my fav character but dont stretch it . . . I love and hate Grant Morrison's run.

Alison Bechdel's "Fun Home"

The NYT bestseller list don't lie... "Fun Home" is the best read I've had in a long, long time. Love her narrative and would love to read her in just prose. Incredibly absorbing yet unselfconscious and unforced. This is the writer/illustrator of Dykes to Watch out For. Outstanding graphic memoir! Just muh two cents.

While I was a bit off-put by the continuity error in issue #1 (the entire FF is together as a team, during the final sages of Cival war) I find the art to be exemlpary, and the story looks like its going somewhere. I looked through issue two at the shop, but unfortunatly, with my finances as they are at the moment, I'm letting my box fill up for the time being, and I havn't read it. anybody else

or is there something else good out there someone wants to talk about?

An unsolicited plug: Aline Kominsky-Crumb's new graphic memoir, "Need More Love," is really enjoyable! Picked it up a couple of weeks ago. Great photos, strips of hers and Robert's I hadn't seen before... fun pics of the interior of their home in France, interesting dirt on her family background (Aline's), as well as a generous amount of material on what she's up to now.

I've always liked Aline's prose and would love to meet her -- a fascinating person with great honesty and -- cliche, I know -- *verve*. Her art is primitive and wouldn't have been my taste if I hadn't been exposed to it in her and R's duets (see Dirty Laundry, etc). Anyhoo, I find her hilarious and the book is good eye candy.

UNSCREWED!, the organization created by comics creators, fans, and retailers to combat illegal and unethical practices by a would-be publisher, today announced a benefit auction to provide relief to the artists and writers exploited by that company. Since its inception in January, UNSCREWED! has grown quickly, amassing support from top name talents in the comic book industry, as well as many who are just begining their careers. The group was formed in early January of this year in response to the publisher's unethical business practices. After one writer's story was brought to light by an online journalist covering the comics business, several other creators came forward with shockingly similar stories of uncompensated work and threats of both physical violence and legal prosecution. UNSCREWED! grew out of a desire to assist the injured parties and to hold the publisher accountable.

While UNSCREWED! was forming, comics writer Mark Waid stepped forward to personally finance legal action against the publisher. Tom Stillwell, writer-publisher of Spinner Rack Comics' HONOR BRIGADE and comics fan Matt "Doc" Martin provided research and supporting evidence, with the result that two court judgments have recently been awarded to artists who filed suit.

With legal redress firmly underway, UNSCREWED! has turned its attention to the first of their relief efforts, the UNSCREWED! Auctions, with a starting line-up of 17 items available via eBay, including one-of-a-kind and rare items from the top names in comics. UNSCREWED! media representative Danny Donovan had this to say about the auctions taking place: "It is just amazing to see our community standing strong in the face of something like this. For the longest time we've been thought of as a closed off, insular industry, but with UNSCREWED! we're proving that we're a community. When one person is wronged by the actions of an unscrupulous individual and [that individual] is left unchecked, they are able to do it again to someone else. By taking a stand we place the power back into the hands of those who create."

The first series of UNSCREWED! Auctions includes original art by acclaimed cartoonist Scott Shaw! of his characters from Captain Carrot and the Zoo Crew; individual headshots of Captain Carrot, Fastback, Little Cheese, Pig Iron, Rubber Duck, Yankee Poodle, American Eagle, and Alley-Kat-Abra. At the New York Comic-Con last weekend, DC Comics announced a new three-issue miniseries, CAPTAIN CARROT: THE FINAL ARC, to be drawn by Shaw! from a script by Bongo Comics' Bill Morrison. Donovan explains, "before DC releases their brand new epic mini series, you can own a piece of history, drawn and signed by the artist, Scott Shaw! And if that’s not enough you can also own a piece of PRE-history," referring to a headshot of beloved animated icon Fred Flintstone, a character that has been a major part of Shaw's career over the last three decades. Starting bids for each portrait are set at $25.

Famed writer Marv Wolfman (Teen Titans; Crisis of the Infinite Earths; creator of Blade) has contributed autographed full comic scripts from his current series, NIGHTWING, issues #125-127, along with the published corresponding issues (with art by Dan Jurgens) also signed by Wolfman. Bidding on this one of a kind piece of comic book memorabilia begins at $20.

A page of original art from Tom Bedland’s popular and critically acclaimed, award winning comic, “TRUE STORY, SWEAR TO GOD” has been donated by the author. This piece is from the original self published version of the currently being published by IMAGE COMICS. Complete with autograph by prolific artist/writer Tom Beland, the bidding on this stunning piece of art begins at $200.

Kurt Busiek has donated an extremely rare deluxe hardcover edition of his award-winning series MARVELS, which launched artist Alex Ross to super-stardom. It is an artist’s proof and not available anywhere else but UNSCREWED! Signed by both Busiek and Ross, the book features a second autograph by Busiek with a special message for UNSCREWED! Anybody else ever studied the grim and perverted late sixties? It's not all 'Freak Brothers'. Most of it would still be considered pretty heavy today; in the sixties they were sold just like drugs - you had to go to some dude's house and sneak around with the shit. Nifty little reminder of what the USA has actually been historically versus the USA we're instructed about during childhood.

i just read that gwyneth paltrow is signed on to play pepper potts in the iron man movie.

sounds good to me.

and the animated iron man dvd is due out on the 23rd.

also good.

I stole this link from another tribe - it's about a 45 minute audio interview w/ del Toro and Terry Gross of NPR concerning (mostly) his academy award nominated film currently in theaters, Pan's Labyrinth and what inspires him from his childhood / upbringing. At around 41:00 he talks briefly about Hellboy 2 but throughout the clip, he speaks of monsters, creatures, fairy tales and the like:

If you haven't seen Pan's Labyrinth yet - there might be some *slight* spoilers in this audio clip, but I'm pretty sure you could summize most of it from movie posters and previews / trailers. I wish I had listened to this interview before I saw the film to get a better idea of his inspiration and childhood background. I'm VERY excited for this to come out on DVD so I can listen to the director's commentary track.

After listening to this, I have decided that Guillermo del Toro is a true comic book geek! heh!

Eternals Variant issue #6 of 7 MISPRINT!

hey. I wanted to gather some info and see if what I have is really rare, or only a bit rare. In recent years, MARVEL's quality assurance has been less than great. I've gotten comics with torn pages, fouled inking and general misprinting problems of all kinds, like torn staples and what not. but now I have something different. I was wondering how many people had a copy like mine.

Neil Gaimen's Eternals relaunch is up to issue #6 of Seven. I have a regular copy I left in my box at the store, and I broughtthe variant home to read. Inside, the fist and last eight pages are repeated. ie: eight pages were printed twice and bound around the entire comics, so that it reads: first eight pages, first eight pages, middle of the story, last eight pages, last eight pages...

Now, its already a variant, but how many variants, and how many standard covers contain this mistake? a few? Many? none?

I'd love to hear from anybody who got issue six.

I got the hardbound "Lost Girls" box. Most all of the Ultimates stuff I didn't have yet, some "Top Ten", a few JLA things... awsome!
